The "Yolk" Debate

Over the past few weeks my brother and I have had the opportunity to share breakfast together every Sunday (which I’m very grateful for).

And every Sunday I have to ask the big guy upstairs for grace so I don’t debate with my brother on why eggs are good nutritionally.

So it’s Tuesday and hit me how many more Nate’s out there and skipping around sharing the egg yolks raise cholesterol 🙄🐣

A large egg typically contains 185mg of cholesterol and since the American Heart Association recommends we don’t exceed 300mg a day we pretty much guilt folks for eating two eggs

🚫There happens to be a problem AHA's recommendation. It assumes that when we eat more cholesterol (from eggs and other animal foods) our blood cholesterol increases.

🚫Your body doesn't work that way

✅Research shows that the cholesterol you eat has very little impact on how much cholesterol is in your blood.

If that sounds weird, maybe this will help...

You see, your body makes cholesterol. Lots of it, in fact. Every single day you produce between 1 and 2 grams of it on your own.

The interesting twist?

When you eat more cholesterol from foods like eggs, your body produces less of it. And when you eat less cholesterol from foods like eggs, your body produces more. That's because you have a cholesterol "set point." Think of it like a thermostat that's largely determined by your genetics, exercise habits, and stress.

✅We’ve deemed cholesterol as bad, but it’s not. It’s an important nutrient for every cell membrane in your body and is required for the production of hormones.

🐣Egg yolks contain 90 percent of the calcium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, thiamin, B6, folate, pantothenic acid, and B12 of the egg.

🐣In addition the yolk contains all of the fat-soluble components, such as vitamins A, D and E, not to mention the heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

🚫 My ask is that if you have a Nate in your family to educate on why following sensationalistic food FADS are a terrible idea and because Nate doesn’t have any social media I’m hoping that someone show him this before Sunday so I can dip my bacon in my eggs while still loving my brother 🍳
